sitting sideways
Does "sitting sideways" mean that the seats were not exactly in front of the screen and they were placed in another direction?
We viewed the film sitting sideways on in a couple of short rows of rickety old cinema seats.

'Sitting sideways' would usually be taken to mean the seats were turned to the side or you were sitting on them turned to the side. In other words, not facing the screen. If this is what you mean, it is correct. If you mean that you were facing the screen but the seats were not in front of the screen, it would be better to say 'sitting to one side of the screen'. It is a bit tricky though.
