can you tell me when one uses "Kinder" and when "Kindern"

You will use Kindern when using plural for the dative case. check the table:
Nominativ (1. Fall) die Männer die Frauen die Kinder
Genitiv (2.Fall) der Männer der Frauen der Kinder
Dativ (3. Fall) den Männern den Frauen den Kindern
Akkusativ (4. Fall) die Männer die Frauen die Kinder
This means that either when the children are either the indirect object of the action or when they are following a preposition that asks for dativ (i.e. mit, zu, nach, etc.)
