How to use the -ING form in Chinese? (Gerunds)
Can the character be omitted in some sentences? Can you give me some examples?
e.g. A really common phrase is ‘‘我请你吃饭’’ but this form is in ''future tense'' or ''present tense'' ? Does it depend on the situation?

May I speak the honest truth?
1. It is totally wrong to assume that the Chinese language behaves according to English grammar.
2. The nearest English equivalent to 我请你吃饭 is "Let me take you out for dinner" or "Let me buy dinner." In English grammar this is called the imperative mood. It is not a tense.

it depends on the situation and in chinese you add words to determine whether it is done or will be done or it is on going.
我請你吃飯 this can be future and present, it depends
我請了你吃飯 this means I already treat you a meal (kind of means past tense)
我會請你吃飯 this means i will treat you a meal (this is kind of future tense)
hope this helps

There are 2 points you need pay attention to: runds and tenses.
1、Gerunds
当动词用在动宾短语中作动名词的时候,不会发生变化。There's no change to a verb when it is used in a verb-object phrase.
e.g. “我能回答你的问题” - I can answer your question.
"回答大家的问题会帮助他们" - Answering others' questions will help them.
2、Tenses
时态可以通过上下文来表现,也有一些副词用于表明时态。Tense usually depends on some adverbs such as "了", "会", "正在" and so on. In some cases, the tense may also depends on the situation in the context.
e.g. “我能回答你的问题” - I can answer your question.
“我回答了你的问题” - I answered your question. PAST tense.
“我正在回答你的问题” - I am answering your question. PRESENT CONTINUOUS tense.
"我会回答你的问题" or "我将要回答你的问题" - I will answer your question. FUTURE tense.
希望能有所帮助。

in ordinary life we say"我请你吃饭”means“我要请你吃饭”
我请你吃过饭
我请过你吃饭(此处吃饭二字可以省略,写为“我请过你”)means I had treated you before
