Steve is correct. To elaborate, the Japanese writing system is composed of 3 scripts: kanji , katakana, and hiragana. Kanji characters are derived from Chinese characters. Many kanji characters are still used in Chinese (non-simplified) and the Japanese and Chinese meanings usually overlap (although the readings don't).
The Japanese took a Chinese invention and made it their own: hence "Kanji".

In English the only meaning is as the name of the Japanese style of writing Chinese derived characters. Does that make sense?
