difference between indicator and index

indicator = an instrument to control the performances of a system (eg vehicles)
index = a list of things or subjects (eg in books) or 2) a specific mark for an object
Therefore in Economics, these terms can be very close one another, since an Index (mark) can be an Indicator (signal) as well.
