Is "carro" a slang word for "coche" ?

En Chile se dice "auto" en comparacion al resto de los otros países que dicen "carro" o "coche". (aquí carro o coche suena ridiculo para referirse a un auto)
la palabra "carro" en Chile se utiliza para el trasporte de materiales por ej. la parte trasera de un camion es el carro.
y "coche" en Chile se utilza para trasportar a un bebe.

I guess the formal word should be "automovil" to refer car and spanish speakers would understand you, so CARRO is often use in latinoamerica but is not formal, if you have contact with latinos to speak you can use CARRO or COCHE and latinos understand it, but I guess is it unformal. it is depend of places or people when you are envolving.
I'm mexican and I always say COCHE, but almost people in mexico say CARRO. this word depend of the context too,

when you want to say "car" in Spain we say "coche" and in latinoamerica say "carro". If you say "carro" in Spain, we are going to think you are referring to a trolley, a cart.

Pues como ya te han dicho, carro = coche. En España decimos coche mientras que en Hispanoamérica carro.

Creo que no se puede decir que carro sea argot. Carro es como se llaman normalmente los coches en Hispanoamérica. En España se dice coche o automóvil (menos frecuente) o auto. Los carros en España eran los tirados por animales y ahora se utiliza para los carritos o carros de la compra en los hipermercados.
