Meaning of "Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult" What' s the meaning of the sentence above? Doesn't the meaning of abstinence and temperance are similar?

Yes, it means that both abstinence and temperance are equally difficult for the speaker. Abstinence means a complete avoidance, whereas temperance means moderation. These are quite different in meaning, even though both require self-control.
