"football" is an umbrella term for many different sports, including: association football - simply called "football" in the UK and "soccer" in the US. "soccer" comes from the word "association". In the UK, we always use "football" (or "footy" or "footie" for short) but some TV programmes use "soccer" in their name. rugby football - simply called "rugby", which is split into "rugby union" and "rugby league". American football - simply called "football" in the US. Then there are other kinds like Gaelic football and Australian rules football.

Here, in England, most people would refer to it as football. In USA, they already had a sport called football, so there they tend to call it soccer.
