what is the difference ? do the words ' thus' and ' consequently' have the same meaning? when do I have to use them in a formal writing and where?

Consequently means as a result of... linking phrase used in the middle of the sentence. He was often late for work consequently he was dismissed. Thus (and in this way/so) she passed her test thus enabling her to drive without supervision.
