How to understand "part way" here? thanks! Hi! Here is the whole sentence: I even paused briefly with the letter part way into the mail slot before i thrust the letter into the mailbox. Thanks for your answer.

It means it is not all the way into the slot.

I would add that "part way" doesn't have to be "half". "Part way" can refer to any proportion. For example, one third of the letter could have been in the mailbox, and two thirds still in the person's hand.

Here, "part way" means half in and half out - only half the letter was in the mailbox; the other half of the letter was still in the person's hand. (I hope that's useful)
