where are you from? poner musica is very colloquial, not standard language.

Mmm... 'Put on' means 'dress up'...
Put music on sounds weird for me... I'm not sure.

Lo de si es inglés o americano yo no lo sé pero en Inglaterra se utiliza constantemente. To put a CD/a song/a DVD/a tape on. También se dice: Put the tele on
I did not know what kind of music to play at the party.
I did not know what kind of music to put on for the party.
El primero = o tocar, o poner música.
El segundo = poner música.
Play a guitar = tocar una guitarra;
Play a CD = poner un CD.
Play music = cualquiera de los dos significados de "play."
