What does the word "involve" mean in this context? could you explain? Discovering why and how birds migrate, and how they find their way, involves understanding the changing seasons, the apparent movements of sun and stars, the weather and the climate. It should provide material especially for science and geography, but also across the whole curriculum. What does the word "involve" mean in this context? could you explain?

I would say, we could replace "involve" by "include" and the meaning will be almost the same. Here it means the following: to understand A, you must understand B,C and D/or to make condition A happen, we must fulfill conditions B,C and D.

The verb "involves" in the text is an expository word-verb to the sentences "Discovering....way".What follows "involves" is a necessary circumstance, condition so as the situation "Discovering....way", to be fully understood. If you nderstand the changing seasons, the apparent movements of sun and stars, the weather and the climate then you will undetstand why and how birds migrate, and how they find their way.

In this case, "involves" understanding the changing seasons means that you "need" to understand the changing seasons and that the migration of birds is "linked to" them. For example, if I said "Speaking English involves learning Anglophone culture" I am meaning "In order to speak English, you need to understand Anglophone culture. The two are linked together."
