Do you think saying "Hi man" is polite?
Sometimes, I hear people saying "Hi man" to began their small talks. What's the "Hi man" meaning here in such small talks? Is it just familiar with "Hello"? Plus, it is sure that is an informal expression, but do you think it is a polite way to start a small talk, even we meet a stranger for the first time?
Would you like to help me on this issue? Thanks a lot.

Hi Lawrence! I would only use that greeting with other guys who are around my age and only in very informal situations (a party, meeting friends of friends, etc).

Never to a stranger! But if in a very informal situation and you both are young and around the same age, you may use it as a way of endearment. In all other situations, makes you being perceived as uncouth or with no professionalism in a business setting etc.
