What does "за" mean ? What does "за" mean in the following sentence? А що це за грубезна книжка? If "за" is a preposition, why the nominative case "грубезна книжка" was used? Is it possible to change into the following sentence? А ця грубезна книжка за що? I can see similar construction in several languages. Що то за штуковина? - Ukrainian Что это за штука? - Russian Was ist das für ein Ding da? - German Co to je za věc? - Czech Co to za przedmiot? - Polish

This word "За" gives meaning - the increased excitement of the person who says it. It (the word "За") is used to express discontent with something, dislike of someone. Examples: "Fuck those jerks, and fuck their stupid rules!" This word is a sign of a strong indignation than, for example: "... грубезна книжка", sad thoughts, disgusting and disgusting deeds. Examples: що це за напасть?; що це за похмурі думки?; що це за неохайність? що це за бруд? And although this word is used to express discontent with something, dislike of someone , it (the word "За") is still not an expression of rudeness.

Here "за" is not a preposition, but an exclamatory particle that helps to express your emotions. А що це за грубезна книжка? Here it means that you are suprised to see this book, you didn't expect to see it. Depending on the context it can express different emotions like anger and joy. When I come home and see, that the house is a mess, usually I shout angrily:"Що за безпорядок?!! Or "Що ти за людина!!!" meaning "What a nasty person you are!"

An example from the work of Mikhail Bulgakov "Ivan Vasilyevich" (and from the film of the same name): "- Ты чьих будешь? - Вы меня извините, товарищ артист, но что такое... ЗА... чьих? - Чей холоп, спрашиваю? (...) - Эта роль ругательная, и я прошу ее ко мне не применять.
