Why do fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing?

Fat chance is sarcastic, while slim chance is not

It doesn't really make sense, but here is my take on it.
Fat chance means that there's a BIG chance it won't work out.
Slim chance means that there's a very small possibility it will work out.
Usually, "fat chance" is used sarcastically. You wouldn't say there's a fat chance of something happening to your boss -- it is more slang.
