for example Bethencourt et al.

I pronounce it as two separate words: /Et/ /ɔl/ et (pause) ahl It's not used commonly in speech since it is an abbreviation.
For the written sentence: "This production was put together by John, María, Thomas, et. al"; I would just say "and others".
