californians love to use "dude." i use "dude" all the time. :P i sometimes call my gal friends "chica," which means "girl" in spanish. when i'm with a group of people, i call them my "posse" or "gente" which means "people" in spanish. i also call my friends by nicknames which i select myself based on an inside joke, i.e. cajole, goody bell; animals-pato (duck), puppy, piggy; yu (fish); adopted web family-sis/bro/meimei/didi, even mommy or uncle; or nicknames based on their names/initials, like QQ, ADSD. or sometimes i'm just old-fashioned and call people by their names. :)

Brian makes me feel awkward. I call all my friends buddy and dude regardless :) Hmm... In addition to Brian (except buddy and bud can be both genders typically..), dudet is typically for girls and dude for guys. Some people say dude to both genders, like me. Matters the person. Girlfriend (girl to friend who is also a girl. not to be confused with one's love) Chica (to a girl) I call all my friends "little boy" or "little girl" too... I know some people who call their friends "darling" or "sweetie." That can be used for someone you love, too, though. Homie, buddy, and dude are probably the most common.
