"Did you ever read the book?" What's the meaning of "ever" in this sentence, please? Thanks!

Ever here is 'at any time'. It's similar to 过 I think.
I think that it would usually be used to express a doubt about whether someone had really read it.

Yes, Gary is right. It means, "Have you at any time read that book?" Implying that you most likely have not. It is a negative connotation.
