öğrencilerdi / öğrenciydiler
Both are plural and past tense.
The difference is:
öğrencilerdi (= öğrenciler + idi) : A group of students, IN ALL. Each one is not important individually.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: They might be still student or not.
öğrenciydiler (=öğrenci + idiler) : Also a group of students, but they are implied on an individual basis in terms of meaning.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: They are not student anymore.

"Öğrencidiler" is definitely wrong. It should be "öğrenciydiler".
So, the correct question is "Öğrencilerdi or öğrenciydiler?"
These two words are not interchangeable and the intended meaning of the sentence determines which one is the proper one.
Examples:
- Az önce okula giren grup, öğrenciler miydi yoksa öğretmenler miydi?
+ Öğrencilerdi. (= Öğrenciler + idi)
- Öğretmenler öğrencilere çok fazla ödev veriyor.
+ Haklısın. Oysa hayata öğretmen olarak başlamadılar, bir zamanlar öğrenciydiler. (=öğrenci + idiler)
