To pick up= To collect The phrasal verb is separable which means that both are correct, I wouldn't necessarily agree that it means by car. I would often say to my friends when I was younger "I can't come out yet, I have to go pick my brother up from school" and I would walk there to 'pick him up'

Hey, I would say that both options are possible if you mean that you're going to go somewhere in your car and collect your brother.
