de + nationalize + (e)d
to nationalize = to make something of a nation.
+ (e)d = to be past tense
denationalized = to make something NOT of a nation
"His ancestors were denationalized by the National Socialists, so he is no longer a citizen. He can regain his citizenship by applying at the embassy."

DE-NATION-AL-IZE-D
1. NATION=root (and base for -DE and -AL)
2. NATIONAL=base for -DE and -IZE
3. DENATIONALIZE=stem for -D
-DE = derivational preffix
-AL=derivational suffix (we can still add other suffix)
-IZ(E)=derivational suffix (we can still add other suffix)
-(E)D=inflectional suffix ((we cannot add other suffix)
We can add derivational affixes (preffixes/infixes/suffixes) to a BASE, but we can add only inflectional suffixes to a STEM.
