A "hack" is a terrible term & wildly overused to mean anything a little unusual or simple. Usually it involves a simple change that repurposes something, that is it has an element that is unusual about it. . The term is so popular & I so wish it would die quickly. . Compared cutting a tomato with a sharp kitchen knife & using a wood saw. The wood saw would hack it. This was the original meaning - using a blunt instrument to do something, particularly when a fine, proper tool was available. Hacking was home computing.. Doing it yourself & cheaply, when the other options were way expensive. :) At that stage there was a reason to hack. Nowadays it seems that making a mess of things by doing it badly is the ambition rather than a necessity. Often used to describe the work of those unskilled in the craft. Rather than a fine musician/tecnician, he was really just a hack.
