기본 is more comprehensive term and 근본 emphasizes the meaning of 'root', 'origins' and 'cause of something'.
-기본 : basics
e.g. 기본에 충실하다(Stick to the basics)
- 근본 : fundamentals
e.g. 근본적인 문제가 있다(It has a fundamental problem)
