Being placed in a virtual lobby occurs when you dial into a conference call before the host starts the meeting and are placed on hold (or in other words, put in the virtual lobby) until the meeting bridge is opened. The real world analog is when you arrive early for a business meeting and are asked to wait in the lobby or reception area until the person you are meeting is available to greet you.
