The name José is Spanish. In Spanish, the /j/ sound is pronounced like the english /h/ sound. The name sounds like saying "ho say" in English. The accent mark on the "e" means you are supposed to stress that syllable more, when speaking Spanish, so it should sound like "ho SAY" not "HO say" but many English speakers make mistakes with the syllable stresses in foreign names. Here is a video where the announcer says it (around the 20-second mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmIhoVrwQTE

hello, the name is not really exotic, at least here. He lives not far from my home (but never meet him on street, of course). in fact, his name is Josep Carreras. Josep (which is the catalan version of joseph) sounds exactly like joseph in english but instead of "ph" say "p" like in ping pong. Carreras: in some kind of pinyin: KA- RRi-Ra-SI. RR like a big motocycle when starting /(beijing R is not very far). KA, chinese has it. RRE like REN (man) in chinese without N. RAS r is softer like english somehow and then S like in english "has", "bus" and the like. funny you think this name is exotic. You can't imagine how many Joseps and how many Carreras are here around.
