I hear 支持 used a lot more. I don't really know how to use 支撐!

支撐 often refers to physical support - things holding other things up 
1）房屋全靠樑柱支撐。
2）沒有支撐，牆就會垮了。

支持 is usually used for support in more of a metaphorical sense 
1）感謝各位的鼎力支持！
2）我支持你的意見！

支撑
①抵抗住压力使东西不倒塌，实际物体：坑道里用柱子支撑着。
