A person described as "self-driven" would be able to push themselves to do necessary things.
They would not need to be told to work. They would be willing to do what is required without pressure from others.
Other words for this quality would be "motivation" or "incentive"
The reason for this type of work ethic can be varied. They might be a person who is eager to please others.
They might be ambitious, wanting to be noticed for their achievements.
They might be the type of person who likes to work independently.

It means you do things yourself without being told to do it. A self driven student reads extra books and learns difficult material, without a teacher telling them to.
