Hi Jessie,
It means to do something exactly as written, in literal manner.
Example:
"He literally ate the whole fridge empty" = He ate EVERYTHING inside the fridge
"He ate the whole fridge empty" = He ate a lot, perhaps leaving only something in the fridge
