Community Tutor" मैं चाहता हूँ " या " मुझे चाहिये "
Is there significant difference in meaning between मैं कुछ चाहता हूँ and मुझे कुछ चाहिये ?
Is there any preference depending on whether you use these expressions with a noun or a verb?
for example:
मैं जाना चाहता हूँ - मुझे जाना चाहिये
मैं एक चपाती चाहता हूँ - मुझे एक चपाती चाहिये
Does चाहना rather express the meaning of 'to want' whereas चाहिये rather means 'to need'?

yes. you can also interpret चाहिए as should
but it depends on context.
e.g. "मुझे अब जाना चाहिए" is "I should go now" or it can be "I need to go now"
"मुझे पेन चाहिए" now it can only mean "I need a pen"
