We can use the past simple with 'until' when we want to say the time that something stopped.
example: I worked at McDonald's until I graduated. (I stopped when I graduated.)
The action cannot continue past the time given after 'until'. The action is complete.

You can also use present or future
I'm looking after my brother until my mother gets home
I will pick up rubbish until the whole beach is clean
