through its open windows came the rich scent of roses.
is that sentence above correct? In my opinion it should have been like this 'a scent of roses came through its open windows'

Both are correct. The first is inverted from normal order and thus has a more poetic "feel".

The sentence is correct and sounds very natural. As for your sentence, it should be "A rich scent of roses came through its open windows." You left out the adjective modifying "roses" in the original sentence.
