All competitors compete, but contenders have a very good chance of winning.

Contender is much less common. I have generally only heard it used in boxing and politics.

Hello! These words are mostly synonyms, but with small preferences in usage. For example, when you speak about economy and companies, using "competitor" is better. Otherwise, they are interchangeable.
