本, here means "this", 年度, is the whole year period, and it doesn't necessarily need to be from January 1st to December 31th.

年度 is a unit of measurement used exclusively in summaries or financial reports. 今年 can be used at will.

You‘re absolutely right. It's a matter of formality. 今年 is more for spoken language. 本年度 is more for written language.
