はじまる is "intransitive"—it only has a subject, no object:
仕事 が はじまる ("the work starts")
はじめる is "transitive"—it has a subject and an object:
私 が 仕事 を はじめる ("I start the work")
Basically think of it as:
が + はじまる
を + はじめる
