A graduate student is STILL a student. The student has completed a degree (for instance, a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree). Now, the student is continuing his/her education at a college or university for a "graduate degree" -- a higher degree, such as a Masters degree.
After this second degree, the student may continue as a "doctoral student", which means that the student is continuing his/her education to get a third degree, such as a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy degree).
