Hello Vita, It depends where you are going to stay in Switzerland. In Switzerland there are basically 3 languages spoken, they simply have more than one official language. 1- German: It is the most widely spoken language there by about 60% of the population. It dominates most of the Swiss cantons in both the center and some of the east of Switzerland. The German spoken there forms a dialect that is quite different from the official German spoken in Germany "Hochdeutsch",but if you learned the official German you will be understood and it wouldn't be difficult for you to understand the dialects. So in case you are staying in "Zürich" or " Bern" you should rather consider learning German. 2- French: French is the second language spoken by 20% of the people in Switzerland. It dominates in East Switzerland, where it has borders with France. It is very much like the French spoken in Paris. If you are heading "Geneva" then you should learn French. Most of the french speaking Swiss don't speak good German if at all. 3- Italian: It is spoken in the South of Switzerland by 6 % of the population. It is a dialect that resembles the Italian spoken in the North of Italy. Most of the Swiss speaking Italian do speak German as well. So knowing your destination will help you decide which language to learn. If you could handle learning more than one that would be better. For example if you will travel to the South you could learn both Italian and German. Some people in Switzerland speak Romanish too , but only a little percentage *less than 1% of the population*. Good luck in your choice:)

Switzerland is surrounded by France, Italy, Germany and Austria. Most people speak multi-languages. The most commonly spoken languages are: German, French, Italian and English. Which language should you learn? it depends on which part of Switzerland you are going to stay. Do some homework before commencing. Here is the site for Switzerland, http://www.about.ch/welcome.html
