Need is a noun and to need is a verb.
I have a need for an assistant. <- used as a noun
She needs to go to the doctor. <- used as a verb
The meanings are basically the same so it just comes down to grammar and usage. Also for the record, this is something where you can simply look up the word need in the dictionary and see it has a noun and verb meaning.
