Astrid gave an example of it used to mean tear from the verb to rip, but there is another meaning: Exciting, thrilling, excellent. E.g. "Ripping Yarns" from a TV show, it meant exciting stories (it was a joke). It is very old fashioned and I don't think anyone would use it today except as a joke.

Stop it. You're ripping the page. (tearing the page) "ripping" also has slang and informal uses. Stop ripping on me. (stop insulting me, this is common) He's ripping movies from his DVD collection. (He's electronically extracting content from one form of digital media to another)
