What does 'shelf' mean here?
Dear italki users,
I'm a bit confused by 'shelf' in the song 'Toss a Coint to Your Witcher' from 'The Witcher' Netflix show. In this song, Jaskier (the bard) tell the story about the hero who fought evil elves.
At the edge of the world
Fight the mighty horde
That bashes and breaks you
And brings you the morn’.
He thrust every elf
Far back on the shelf (!!!),
High up on the mountain
From whence it came.
What does 'shelf' mean here? Is it like a book shelf or sea shelf? Which option makes more sense? And by the way, does this line make you think of 'elf on the shelf'?
Thank you!

To put something/someone "on the shelf" is to say it is not needed/unwanted/abandoned (i.e. a book on the shelf is not being read).
Haha, yes it does make you think of elf on the shelf! I feel like that toy is so well known the reference may be deliberate/a subtle joke.
