Help please What does it mean 'slave to spare'? Learning to write well means discovering how to write plainly and clearly. Now that doesn’t mean that plainness is the only good style, or that you should become a slave to spare, unadorned writing.

to become a slave to something = to do something obsessively "spare, unadorned writing." is the the noun and adjectives . He was helpful, but became a slave to answering questions. "spare writing" - no clue. Watch for the answers of others.

I personally think 'spare' does not make sense here. It might have the sense of 'sparse', but I think there is a typo, or, quite simply, badly written English.

'Spare' here means plain and simple, without ornament.
