What's the difference between gem and jewel?

I don't think there is a significant difference. I think jewel is used more commonly than gem, but it is a matter of taste which word you want to use.

A gem is a precious stone, capable of being polished, cut, or designed into a designer jewel to be worn or displayed.
Gem is the raw material; jewel is the work of art.
