Function vs work
Are "function" and "work" interchangeable?
For example:
My brain doesn't function (work) properly.
My car's engine isn't functioning (properly) properly in the last few weeks.
Thanks in advance!

I suppose they mean almost the same. My friend from the United States said that "function" is a fancy word. I am not 100% sure what "fancy" means, though I guess that he said "function" is too formal or something like that.

Yes, "function" is listed as a synonym for "work".
"Work" is more likely to be used for something that produces an end product.
Great question.
