Как верно подметила Ann, "почему" - причина, "зачем" - цель.
- Почему ты мне не позвонил? (Неверно сказать "Зачем ты мне не позвонил?")
- Я был занят.
- Зачем ты мне позвонил?
- Хотел поговорить.
(Можно задать вопрос "А почему ты мне позвонил?"(а не написал, например), но тогда ответ будет другим, например: "Да долго писать, проще позвонить)
I see how these two words can be confusing but you're right, you just need more examples to understand the difference.

Почему = for what reason
Зачем = for what purpose
But sometimes there is almost no difference between them in real-life communication.
Зачем ты это сделал? = Почему ты это сделал?
Зачем ты здесь стоишь? = Почему ты здесь стоишь?
Here you want to know, why he is acting this way. May be he is acting this way by some reason, may be for some purpose, you don't know. So, you can use any of these words.
But when you want to know exactly the REASON, you should use ПОЧЕМУ.
For example. "why grass is green and sky is blue?" = "Почему трава зеленая, а небо голубое?"

почему = why
зачем = what for

почему = perché
зачем = a che scopo

Their English equivalents are
Почему = Why
Зачем = What for
However, in both Russian and English those two are frequently interchangeable.
I think a better way to understand the difference between the two words and to use them correctly is to compare their meanings with their Spanish counterparts:
Почему = por qué
Зачем = para qué
