What is the difference between ‘intersection’, ‘junction’ and ‘crossroad’?

Hello,
These are basically interchangeable. Generally speaking, in the US I think "crossroads" is used for rural roads, where there might not be a traffic light or stop sign. "Intersection" suggests a light or signage. Junction is used more for for railroads. I have never heard it used conversationally for roads.
Hope that helps.
Best,
Martha
