Why some koreans say 알고 있었어? Im watching a 드라마 and the characters tend to use the verb 알다 in the past progressive form to refer: did you know?. My doubt is why it is on a progressive form and not like this: 알았어?

알아요 is used as the meaning of "I know (a fact or a person)." 알고 있어요 means "I'm aware of it." So 알고 있었어요 means "I was aware of it."
