What's the best way to greet someone online? In online conversations, where you might not know what time zone the listener is in, would you simply use こんにちは? Or is it normal to base the greeting on your own time zone?

>Or is it normal to base the greeting on your own time zone? I don't think it is. If you want to do this, of course, you can. I would say ”こんにちは".

「はじめまして」 works too if you are meeting the person for the first time.

こんにちは is definitely a safe generic choice. どうも is useful too in a casual setting!
