In first place or in the first place? I'm a bit confused about this phrase. what are they correct?

In first place is often used when referring to the results of a competition. He ran the race and came in first place. In the first place is used when presenting an argument or when listing the sequence of events. In the first place, he was the superior candidate for the position. Hope this helps! :)
