Perhaps it was lost in translation? I understand what they tried to say in this dialog, but it's unusual and sounds weird in everyday conversation. Perhaps the writer meant:
Julie: Hey, yeah. Come in.
James: You guys made me ask (to get) off (from work) an hour early to see this dump?
