yo digo "tocar la puerta". Se toca la puerta, no a la puerta, el "a" está de más. Aunque no te preocupes mucho, si lo dices se te entenderá.

Sí, la expresión correcta es "tocar o llamar a la puerta"
Si te refieres a llamar al timbre o golpear la puerta para que te abran, es "tocar a la puerta".
