"make a friend" is singular and "make/making friends" is plural. you would use "make a friend" when you are saying you want to make a friend and "make/making friends" when you are making multiple friends. for example "i would like to make a new friend today" or " i am gonig to make alot of friends today becuase i feel very nice"
